WWII Ship Docked in Evansville
Published Apr 16, 2008

Ahoy there: The USS LST-325 Ship Memorial is open to visitors.

The last World War II-era LST (landing ship, tank) still in operation in the world is permanently docked in downtown Evansville. It serves as a museum with tours led by military veterans and trained volunteers.

The ship was launched in 1942 and was part of the famed D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. While the LST-325 was not manufactured in Evansville, the Evansville Shipyard once employed 19,000 workers and was the biggest producer of LSTs during World War II.
